Elderly Driver Dies After Car Crashes Into Lagoon On Hilton Head Island

The only thing scarier than thinking about your teen son or daughter driving is thinking about your elderly parents driving. Having a driver’s license and a car means that you have independence. Even though Americans are first applying for driver’s licenses at a later age, on average, than they did a generation ago, some teens still jump at the opportunity to be in control of their own wheels. Likewise, some seniors hold fast to their cars and their car keys even when their relatives worry that their state of health makes it unsafe for them to drive. Poor vision, memory impairment, and medication side effects are just a few of the risk factors for elderly drivers. Taking away an adult’s driving privileges because of health and safety risks is a messy legal process. Elderly drivers who drive in spite of their medical risk factors bear legal responsibility for car accidents they cause; if there are other contributing factors to the accident, such as unsafe road conditions or mistakes by multiple drivers, then South Carolina’s laws of comparative negligence apply. Rescuers Retrieve Body of 90-Year-Old Woman From Lagoon
The Beach Lagoons neighborhood in Sea Pines is a shining example of why, when it comes to retirement destinations, South Carolina is the new Florida. With its lower prices and less dense population, seniors increasingly choose South Carolina as the place to spend their golden years. South Carolina, like Florida, has its dangers, though; you have probably heard about the alligator attacks on seniors and their dogs when they walked near the scenic lagoons near the South Carolina coast.
One design feature in Beach Lagoons has been the site of several fatal accidents. A grassy slope at the side of the road leads directly to the lagoon; there is no barrier to keep cars away from it. In 2023, a car that was backing out of a driveway on Beach Lagoon Road slid down the slope. The driver was able to swim to safety, but the two passengers drowned; all three vehicle occupants were men over the age of 70. A wrongful death lawsuit against Beach Lagoons is pending in connection with this incident.
On March 31, 2026, a similar accident happened in the evening, although there were no witnesses to know whether the car backed out of a driveway or veered off the road while driving straight. The next morning, witnesses saw the car submerged in the water and called the police. First responders pulled the car out of the water. The driver, a 90-year-old woman from Bluffton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
