Beware Of Deadly Curves In The Road

RolloverDitch

Some cities are laid out on a grid pattern, while others follow the shape of their natural features. Grid pattern cities may be more welcome to novice drivers, and they certainly are easier for self-driving vehicles, if and when these become a constant presence in populated areas. Meanwhile, the places that conform to natural features of the landscape win hands down when it comes to charm. This is one of the reasons that South Carolina is quickly becoming the most sought-after destination in the Sun Belt, for retirees and young people alike. Drives through the mountains and beside the rivers or the coast provide scenic views at any time of year. These roads are harder to navigate, though, especially at night and in adverse weather conditions. For example, there is an ancient oak tree on James Island that has been there so long, that when it came time to build roads, the tree called dibs on the location, so the road builders built the road around it, and they had no choice but to make the road an awkward shape. After enough fatal collisions involving the tree, the local people nailed a sign to it that said, “Widowmaker,” but still the fatal accidents continued. If you got injured in a car accident where the irregular shape of the road was a contributing factor, contact a Columbia car accident lawyer.

Horrific Single Vehicle Collision on Highway 121 in Saluda County

The namesake of Saluda County is the Saluda River, and many of the roads in the county take their cues about their shape from the course of the river. One evening in February 2026, a 2007 Honda Civic was driving on Highway 121 in Saluda County. Somewhere near the intersection with Lennies Road, just outside the city limits of the town of Saluda, the driver lost control of the car. The car went off the road, struck a ditch, hit an embankment, and overturned, before striking a tree, landing on its roof, and catching fire.

The accident is still under investigation. The State Columbia website did not release any information about the driver. We do not know the driver’s age or whether police suspect him or her of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

The victim’s family may be able to recover damages by filing a wrongful death claim. If the driver consumed alcohol at a bar before driving drunk, they might have a case for a dram shop liability lawsuit against the bar or restaurant that served alcohol to the driver. If the accident could have been prevented by installing a railing on the side of the road, then they might have a case against Saluda County, pursuant to the doctrine of premises liability.
