Car Accidents On And Near Bridges

GuardrailBridge

When you are a child, riding in a car as it crosses a bridge is exhilarating. You feel like you are flying. When you are the one driving, it is not nearly as much fun, as you are acutely aware of the dangers. It seems more obvious that, if something goes wrong, there is little to protect you. There might be a road shoulder, and of course there is some sort of guardrail or wall on the side of the bridge, but if you get into a wreck on a stretch of highway with grassy fields on either side, there is a strong possibility that you will come to a soft landing on the grass. South Carolina’s rivers might look beautiful from the bridge above when you drive across them, but the thought of your car plunging into the river is terrifying. First responders can sometimes achieve heroic rescues by freeing people who have been trapped in their vehicles after an accident, but this is easier when the vehicle is easily within reach on the road or on to the grass, and the rescuers do not first have to fish it out of the water. Sometimes the architects of bridges successfully prevent this outcome by building high walls around the bridge, but crashing into a wall after a car accident is hardly an ideal outcome, either. Several devastating accidents have recently occurred on or near bridges in South Carolina. Two Vehicles Collide on US-378 Near Pee Dee River Bridge

A serious accident occurred on Saturday, February 21on US-378 in Florence, just before the Pee Dee River Bridge. The ABC 15 news website described one of the vehicles involved as a Chevy and the other vehicle as a pickup truck. The news report said that both vehicles were in the westbound lanes at the time of impact, but it did not say which vehicle struck which, nor from what angle. The only occupant of the pickup truck was the driver, and he was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. There were two people in the Chevy, and they both suffered injuries serious enough to require hospitalization, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

Collision on Ashley River Bridge Diverts Traffic

Meanwhile, in January 2026, there was a fatal accident on the Ashley River Bridge in Charleston. News reports did not say how many vehicles were involved in the collision or how many people died and how many people, if any, were injured. Instead, the ABC 4 news website shared an X post by the Charleston Police Department, saying that, while first responders were responding to the accident, the city was diverting traffic to Wesley Drive.
