Two People Injured In High-Speed Collision Believed To Be Alcohol-Related

Alcohol is a factor in a disproportionate number of car accidents, especially in South Carolina, which consistently ranks in the top ten states for drunk driving, especially relative to its small population. Excessive speed is another major cause of traffic accidents. When they get together, as they often do, things are even worse. Most fatal collisions where the striking vehicle was traveling at 70 miles per hour would have resulted only in non-life-threatening injuries if the cars had not been traveling so quickly. When cars drive at speeds that exceed the speed limits of the fastest interstate highways, it is usually more than a minor driving mistake. It takes a while for a car to accelerate from the posted speed limit to 100 miles per hour; if you were distracted because of a notification on your phone, you would notice before your speed got that fast. When accidents involve extreme speeds, it is either because the drivers are trying to go that fast because they are racing or fleeing, or because they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you got injured in an accident caused by alcohol, excessive speed, or both, contact a Columbia car accident lawyer.
At Fault Driver’s Speedometer Was Stuck at 100 Miles Per Hour
A car accident in July 2025 left two people hospitalized in critical condition after a red Fiat crashed into a gray Toyota at 100 miles per hour. Kevin Serrano was driving his Fiat on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston. He crashed into the Toyota near Greenbridge Road just before 10:30 p.m.
The driver of the Toyota suffered critical injuries. First responders extracted her from the car before transporting her to the hospital. The woman who was riding in the passenger seat of Serrano’s car also suffered severe injuries and required ambulance transport.
The speedometer of Serrano’s car read 100 miles per hour; according to the ABC 4 news website, when people drive at high speeds and then crash, the speedometer gets stuck at the speed the car was traveling at the time of impact. The accident is still under investigation, but if this is true, then it is wondrous that Serrano’s injuries were not more severe than they were, since the risk of death is high at that speed. Police said that Serrano appeared severely intoxicated when they interviewed him, but news reports did not indicate whether he took a breathalyzer test or, if he did, what his blood alcohol content (BAC) measurement was. He was arrested, and his bond amount is more than $150,000; he could face charges for DUI resulting in serious bodily injury.
