June 2025 Motorcycle Accidents In South Carolina

CemeteryHelmets

The biggest motorcycle events of the year have come and gone from South Carolina, and now we can settle in for a summer of peaceful or adventuresome riding, depending on where we choose to ride.  Safety is the top priority at the Palmetto State’s motorcycle rallies, and we usually get through them without any motorcycle collisions that cause severe injuries.  Part of this is because there is safety in numbers; you are less likely to crash when you are riding in a big group where everyone is abiding by the speed limit than you are when you are riding along in the dark on an isolated road and can lose focus on your surroundings and on your speed.  Furthermore, there is increased enforcement of DUI and other traffic laws at motorcycle rallies.  Now that the Bike Week attendees have gone home, the usual hazards are still here.  If you have suffered injuries in a motorcycle accident in South Carolina, contact a Columbia motorcycle accident lawyer.

Recent Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in South Carolina

Dozens of people have already lost their lives in motorcycle accidents in South Carolina this year.  These are some accidents about which news reports have recently appeared:

  • Ralph Coggins, Jr. of Cowpens was riding his motorcycle on West Cherokee Street in Cherokee County on June 5. When he reached the intersection with Moss Street, he collided with a Cherokee pickup truck that was stopped at the intersection.  The accident happened near the state line between North Carolina and South Carolina.  Coggins, 77, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  The driver of the pickup truck, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was not injured.
  • On June 6, David Holguin was riding his motorcycle on W.O. Ezell Boulevard in Spartanburg. When attempting to change lanes, he lost control of a motorcycle, veered into the median, and collided with a tree.  He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  He was 23 years old.  Holguin was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
  • On June 2, Bobby Goode was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle eastward on S.C. 14 in Spartanburg County near the state line separating South Carolina from North Carolina. He was transporting Sarah Brittany McElrath as his passenger.  Both Goode and McElrath were wearing helmets.  Goode’s motorcycle struck the driver’s side of a truck that was traveling west; news reports did not indicate which vehicle crossed the center line.  McElrath died at the scene of the accident.  She was 36 years old.  Goode was transported to a hospital, but he died later in the evening.  He was 60 years old.
