Accidents On Driveways Can Be Deadly

Almost everyone has seen horrifying images on the news of the wreckage when vehicles collided at high speeds when a driver recklessly ran a red light at an intersection or drove the wrong way and crashed into oncoming traffic. Accidents that happen at slower speeds, in places where there is less traffic, can be catastrophic, too. Parking lots are often the site of devastating collisions. A car that is going slightly too fast might strike another vehicle or a pedestrian. Even with modern vehicle technology such as rear facing cameras and sensors that cause the car to brake when an obstacle is nearby cannot avoid all obstacles. When people back into parking spaces, it is especially dangerous for bystanders to predict the driver’s next move, because the driver must often turn the car at many awkward angles before being able to back straight into the parking space. The same can happen in driveways when a driver is backing into or out of a driveway. If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident at or near a residential or commercial driveway, contact a Columbia truck accident lawyer.
Fatal Collision Between Pickup Truck and Tractor-Trailer Backing Into Driveway
Greenville County witnessed 45 fatal traffic accidents in 2025, and so far, it has witnessed at least one in 2026. Early one morning in early January, a tractor-trailer was backing into a private driveway near the intersection of Whitmire Drive and Whitehorse Road, when a 2012 Ford pickup truck struck the commercial vehicle. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the driver of the pickup truck died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the collision. The State news website did not release the name of the pickup truck driver or indicate whether either of the drivers was wearing a seatbelt.
The surviving family members of people killed in motor vehicle accidents have the right to seek monetary compensation for the loss of a family member and because of the financial losses they suffered because of the victim’s untimely death. They can do this by filing an insurance claim or wrongful death lawsuit against the party or parties legally responsible for the accident. In most cases involving a commercial truck, the logical way to seek compensation is by filing a claim with the commercial liability insurance of the company that owns the truck or employs the driver, or with both companies, if they are different. These companies must carry insurance with policy limits sufficient to cover the damage caused by truck accidents, which often involve one or more fatalities, many injuries, and damage to multiple vehicles. It is only necessary to go to court if the company denies responsibility for the accident.
