Chain Reaction Accidents On Bridges

When you are a child passenger in a car, traveling across a bridge is exhilarating. The road sounds different under your car when there is empty air right underneath the road, instead of solid ground. The water is so far below that you might as well be traveling by some more exciting vehicle, such as an airplane or a hot air balloon. It is also a thrill to ride across a bridge in a rideshare car when you are traveling from the airport to a vacation destination that is on the other side of a bridge. The best visits to New York, Chicago, and New Orleans begin with a ride from the airport to the hotel, in which you cross a bridge. Driving on a bridge is the least fun part of your drive when you are behind the wheel. The bridge is the most dangerous part of the ride if the weather is rainy or snowy. If you lose control of your car and slide on the bridge, you are not going to end up in the soft grass. Furthermore, the snow starts to stick to the bridge even while it still melts on contact with the ground on both sides of the bridge. Dump Truck Strikes Three Other Vehicles on Bridge Over Waccamaw River
When we see a dump truck on the highway, we might worry that it will cause havoc by accidentally dumping its contents onto the busy road, but most dump truck accidents are more mundane; they are the same kinds of collisions that could involve any other kind of vehicle. In August 2025, a dump truck caused a chain reaction collision on the Highway 22 bridge over the Waccamaw River in Horry County.
Traffic had come to a standstill on the bridge, but the driver of the dump truck did not brake in time to account for the traffic jam. The dump truck struck the rear of a Chevrolet SUV that was stopped in traffic. This caused the SUV to hit the two cars in front of it, namely a Jeep and a GMC pickup truck.
Because of the impact, the Jeep slid off the bridge and plunged into the river. First responders pronounced the driver, Earl Burnette, dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet SUV, Flora Beltran-Gomez, also died after her car caught fire. The dump truck was also on fire, but its driver did not sustain serious injuries. The driver of the GMC sustained injuries, but they were not life-threatening, and the driver underwent treatment at the hospital.
