The Most Dangerous Places To Drive In South Carolina

I_95_SouthCarolina

South Carolina is not one of the places in the United States with a reputation for being an intimidating place to drive. People who look forward to road trips, and even their rush hour commute in their home towns, balk at the idea of driving in Los Angeles, Miami, or New York. By contrast, South Carolina seems like a chill place to drive, with its relatively small population and the fact that its upscale destinations tend toward elegance instead of daredevil ostentation. The Palmetto State is a more dangerous place to drive than it might seem, though. It consistently ranks highly for the rate of fatal collisions, and it is a perennial fixture in the top ten states for DUI, thanks in no small part to its bachelor and bachelorette party scene and its beachfront bars where the weather is right for drinking daiquiris on the patio for most of the year. Certain roads in South Carolina are the site of a disproportionate share of its most destructive traffic accidents. If you have been injured in an accident on one of the most dangerous roads in South Carolina, contact a Columbia car accident lawyer.

South Carolina’s Most Dangerous Highways

Of South Carolina’s many highways, these are the ones where the greatest number of accidents have occurred in recent years:

  • I-95 runs the entire length of the East Coast of the United States, and it does not lose its New York attitude even when it gets to South Carolina. High speeds, vehicles changing lanes across many lanes of traffic, and aggressive driving contribute to the high rate of accidents.
  • US Highway 17 runs along the coastal part of South Carolina. Many of its drivers are tourists who are prone to errors because they are driving in an unfamiliar place.
  • SC Highway 9 is the longest highway in South Carolina, and it witnesses more fatal collisions than any other road located entirely within the Palmetto State.

The Most Accident-Prone Intersections in South Carolina

Despite its mild-mannered image, Charleston is home to many impatient drivers. The number of fatal collisions in South Carolina that involve excessive speed is more than twice the national average. In fact, Charleston ranks 11th in the country for the number of speed-related collisions, behind many cities with larger populations. So far in 2025, 11 fatal accidents have occurred in Charleston.

Two of the three most dangerous intersections in South Carolina are in or near Charleston. These are the intersection of I-26 and Ashley Phosphate Road and the intersection of I-26 and College Park Road. The other most dangerous intersection in South Carolina is the intersection of I-26 and St. Andrews Road in Columbia.
