Motorcycle Collides With School Bus In Pickens County

Traveling at high speed on a metal contraption in the vicinity of other metal contraptions that are also traveling at high speed is inherently dangerous, but fortunately, there are safety features. Advances in motor vehicle technology over the past century have introduced many safety features, from windshield wipers to clear rainwater from your field of vision to sensors that tell your car to brake automatically when an obstacle is nearby. The safety feature that has prevented more traffic catastrophes than any other is the seatbelt. Traffic fatality rates have been consistently lower since the introduction of seatbelts and seatbelt laws than they were before. Even though all passenger cars have seatbelts for drivers and front and rear seat passengers, some other common types of vehicles do not. For example, motorcycles do not have seatbelts, but the lack of seatbelts is only one of many ways that motorcycles do not offer protection in the event of a collision. Motorcycles are associated with recreational risk taking, and in light of this, it is surprising that school buses, which are supposed to be the most risk averse vehicle, also do not have seatbelts. If you got injured in an accident where your motorcycle collided with a vehicle that has more vehicle structure and more safety features, contact a Columbia motorcycle accident lawyer.

Motorcyclist Airlifted to Hospital After Colliding With School Bus on Morning Route

It was a day when everything went wrong, but it could have been worse. In South Carolina, school starts too early in the morning, and the school year starts too early in the summer. While families from other states were still flocking to South Carolina to lounge on the beach before their summer vacations ended, the young people of Pickens County were up at the crack of dawn, catching the bus to school while the sun beat down.

That would have been bad enough, but one day toward the beginning of the school year, a motorcycle collided with a school bus at about 7:45 in the morning, while the bus had stopped at a bus stop on its morning route to pick up a student. The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital by air ambulance. According to news reports, his injuries were not life-threatening, but he suffered several broken bones. Neither the bus driver nor any of the students on the school bus were injured seriously enough to require medical treatment. One factor that stopped this collision from being worse than it was is that the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. Another factor is that the bus was stopped, and the motorcycle was not traveling at high speed.
