Heavy Thunderstorms Can Lead To Devastating Accidents

Snow is a rare enough occurrence in South Carolina that most people are wise enough to drive slowly, and only to truly necessary destinations, when the snow is falling, or even better, to wait until the snow removal trucks have done their work before they try to drive. Heavy summer rains, on the other hand, are a normal part of life, and in South Carolina, we do not consider them especially disruptive. Even though Florida gets the reputation for the epic summer thunderstorms of the South, we occasionally see terrifying summer rainstorms here in South Carolina, too. Lightning strikes, high winds, hail, low visibility, and falling branches are just some of the hazards of severe thunderstorms. The risks of driving on the highway increase when you are also contending with lightning and heavy rain. If you got injured in a traffic accident on the highway during heavy rain, contact a Columbia truck accident lawyer.
14 Vehicles Collide on and Near Combahee River Bridge on I-95
Even when the skies are clear, heavy traffic of commercial trucks on interstate highways carries a risk of multi-vehicle accidents. Heavy rain makes it harder for truckers and car drivers to judge distances and to brake in time to avoid collisions, even if they have reduced their speed to accommodate for the rain. A bridge on I-95 crosses the Combahee River in rural South Carolina, and during a severe thunderstorm in July 2025, the bridge was the site of two major accidents. One accident occurred at the end of the bridge, just as the southbound lanes merge with dry land, and the other occurred in the middle of the bridge above the river.
The two collisions involved a total of 14 vehicles, six of which were commercial trucks. One of the trucks was hauling sheets of glass, which spilled out onto the road during the collision; in some places, it left piles of broken glass two feet deep. One car was launched ten feet into the air, and it crashed through the trailer of one of the commercial trucks. Two people died in the storm-related accidents, and 26 people were injured seriously enough to require hospitalization. First responders freed an injured person who was trapped in his car with several other vehicles piled on top of it. All of the injured people, including one who arrived at the hospital in critical condition, were transported to the hospital by ambulance, even though the accident took place in a remote area that was a long drive from the nearest hospitals. It was not possible for medical helicopters to airlift patients from the scene of the accident, due to the severe weather.
