Parts Manufacturer Issues Recall Of Steering Gears Installed In More Than 100,000 Trucks

Steering Box

Safety recall notices for car parts may seem like just another piece of junk mail, but you should take them seriously.  Cars have been getting progressively safer for the past few decades, due to the invention of ever safer car parts, from the seatbelt to the airbag to the rear-facing camera.  Another reason why there is a lower rate of car accidents than there was decades ago and these accidents are less destructive is that the manufacturers of automotive parts are constantly inspecting the parts and keeping track of any malfunctions of parts that have already been installed in vehicles.  If one part malfunctions, then the manufacturer issues a recall for all the vehicles with the same kind of part.  This means that vehicle owners should take their vehicles to the dealership to be inspected, and if the part turns out to be defective, the manufacturer will replace it at no cost to the vehicle owner.  A defective car part can cause an accident, but a defective part in a commercial truck can cause a much more destructive accident.  If you have been injured in an accident where a defective part in a commercial truck was a contributing factor, contact a Columbia truck accidents lawyer.

The R.H. Sheppard Steering Gear Recall

R.H. Sheppard is a manufacturer of parts for commercial trucks.  In June 2022, the company issued a recall notice for 10 models of steering gears, which have been installed in 29 different models of trucks, for a total of more than 105,000 vehicles.  According to the recall notice, an error in assembly of the affected steering gears could cause the gears to fracture, leading to the driver’s inability to control the vehicle’s steering system.  No accidents resulting from the defect have been reported.  Trucks subject to the recall include some models of Peterbilt, Kenworth, Daimler, and Volvo trucks.

What to Do If You Are in an Accident Caused by a Defective Truck Part

If you get injured in an accident caused by a commercial truck, the company that owns the truck is liable for your financial losses resulting from the accident.  Therefore, you have the right to file an insurance claim or lawsuit against the company and request compensation for your accident-related medical expenses and lost income.  If a defective truck part was the reason for the accident, rather than an error by the truck driver, you could also file a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer of the truck or the defective parts.  Product liability laws are also relevant in instances where consumers are harmed by other commercial products such as pharmaceutical drugs, toys, or personal care products.
