Scary DUI Incident Narrowly Avoids Causing Serious Injuries

Arrested14

People who get injured in car accidents are in a strong legal position to recover damages, whether through insurance claims or lawsuits, if the at-fault driver left the scene of the accident, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, or both.  The fact that you obviously deserve compensation does not, however, always make it easy to get it.  Most individuals do not have enough money to compensate a severely injured person for all the medical expenses they incurred and income they missed out on as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.  Likewise, if the driver left the scene of the accident, only two outcomes are possible, neither of which makes it easy to collect money from the at-fault driver.  One possibility is that police never figure out the identity of the driver who caused the accident, so you are limited to filing claims with your own insurance policies.  The other possibility is that the driver gets caught and gets convicted of hit and run, DUI, or both; either of these charges can result in long prison sentences if they involve serious bodily injury, and going to prison has never helped anyone’s financial situation.  If you have been injured in a hit and run accident, whether or not alcohol was involved, contact a Columbia car accident lawyer.

A DUI Wild Ride in West Pelzer

West Pelzer is a quiet town in Anderson County, South Carolina, with a population of less than 1,000, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone and nothing moves especially fast.  Therefore, it was certainly out of the ordinary when, in the early afternoon on the day after Easter, a car came barreling down the road at twice the speed limit.  West Pelzer Police Chief Scott Stoller signaled for the car to pull over, and it did, and while Stoller was writing a traffic ticket to give to the driver, she drove away at high speed.

Stoller gave chase, and the woman kept driving; even crashing into a carport barely slowed her down.  Eventually, the driver pulled into the parking lot of a Mexican restaurant, where she crashed into a tree.  Stoller asked the driver her name, and she gave the officer her sister’s name.  Eventually, Stoller figured out that the driver was Samantha Weaver, and she was driving her sister’s car, which she had stolen.  Weaver is now facing criminal charges, including DUI, uninsured motorist, and uninsured motorist.  No one was injured as a result of Weaver’s dangerous driving on that day.
