The Dangers Of Icy Roads In South Carolina

By some definitions, South Carolina counts as part of the Sun Belt. When people choose South Carolina as a retirement destination or as the location of a winter beach vacation, destination wedding, or bachelorette party, the mild weather is usually one of the reasons. The American alligator, a subtropical species, has a robust population in South Carolina. In fact, thanks to the recent construction of so many retirement communities in waterfront areas, South Carolina’s growing human population has more encounters than ever with its alligator population, such that South Carolina is now second only to Florida in terms of the number of alligator attacks on humans. Despite all of this, South Carolina has a more temperate climate than most of the places we associated with the confluence of alligators, retirees, and drunken debauchery. The temperatures drop below freezing almost every winter in many parts of the state, and sometimes there is enough snow to give kids a joyful day off from school. Icy roads are as dangerous in South Carolina as they are in parts of the country where blizzards are a yearly occurrence. Multiple Collisions on Icy Bridges in Horry County and Georgetown County
By the first weekend in December, freezing temperatures had arrived in South Carolina this year. This means that the roads were icy, even though we did not experience anything that the folks up north would consider proper winter weather. Even if the weather report says that the temperature is above freezing, the “feels like” temperature can cause water on the roads to freeze into ice. Rain that fell during the evening can become ice on the roads overnight. Bridges freeze before the rest of the roads do, because there is cold air underneath instead of ground that has retained some of its heat from when the weather was warmer.
Frozen bridges in Georgetown County and Horry County were the site of several collisions earlier this month. The Highway 17 Bridge and the Maryville Bridge in Georgetown County both witnessed multi-vehicle pileups. Meanwhile, there were also several collisions on the Highway 544 Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Horry County. These collisions resulted in damage to many vehicles, but only one person suffered injuries serious enough to require hospitalization.
Drivers should drive slowly, slower than the speed limit, when the roads are wet or icy. Therefore, this could play a role when the insurance companies attribute fault for the accident. Municipal authorities sometimes also bear some of the responsibility for accidents caused by winter weather if they fail to remove ice and snow from roads in a timely manner.
