Living With Mesothelioma Is Exhausting, But It Doesn’t Have To Be Financially Catastrophic

Senior_Oxygen

One of the reasons that only a small fraction of the people who could make a strong case for being awarded damages in a personal injury lawsuit actually file lawsuits is that the injured people feel overwhelmed.  Preparing for a legal battle is stressful enough when you are physically healthy; it is even worse when you are also managing a chronic illness or injury.  It is a well-established legal principle that, if you develop cancer as a result of preventable exposure to carcinogens, you have the right to file a personal injury lawsuit against the party responsible for exposing you to the cancer-causing substances.  For example, malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer; it almost exclusively occurs in people who have experienced occupational exposure to asbestos dust.  Likewise, the recently passed Honoring Our Pact Act makes it easier for military veterans sickened by carcinogens in the drinking water at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base to collect damages.  If you have received a cancer diagnosis after occupational exposure to carcinogens in a military or civilian work environment, a Columbia personal injury lawyer.

Mesothelioma and Chemotherapy: Tired If You Do and Tired If You Don’t

Fatigue, defined as feeling tired even after you have rested, has many possible causes, from the common cold to emotional burnout to natural aging.  Many patients diagnosed with cancer report that they felt more tired than usual for several months before developing the symptoms that led them to see the doctor who did the tests that eventually led to the cancer diagnosis.  Pleural mesothelioma, in which a tumor forms on the linings between the lungs and the rib cage, decreases your breathing capacity, which leads to fatigue.  It can also cause the buildup of fluid in the chest, further limiting the ability of your lungs to expand.

Fatigue is also associated with mesothelioma treatments.  Draining fluid from the chest cavity can bring fast relief, but with the tumor present, the fluid eventually comes back.  Surgery to remove the tumor requires removal of part of a lung, or even an entire lung.  This can put the cancer in remission, but it means that your only choice is to breathe without two whole lungs, which will not restore your pre-diagnosis energy levels.  With or without surgery, most mesothelioma patients undergo chemotherapy.  Fatigue is a common side effect of chemotherapy, but chemotherapy-induced fatigue usually goes away on its own a few weeks after your last chemotherapy infusion.

Seeking Justice After a Mesothelioma Diagnosis, Even If You Are Exhausted

When you are exhausted from cancer and its treatment, money and justice are the last things you have time to think about.  It is in your interest and that of your family, however, that you file a mesothelioma claim to get the cost of the treatments covered, as well as your lost income, if mesothelioma requires you to retire early.  Designate a trusted family member to communicate with a lawyer on your behalf, and the lawyer can do the heavy lifting, so you can focus on your treatment.
