Four People Killed In Three Accidents During Holiday Weekend

Long weekends in the summer tend to be peak times for motor vehicle accidents. When people have more than two days between shifts at work, they are more likely to go on road trips, and when the weather is warm, people are keen on outdoor recreation. Likewise, Memorial Day weekend and the Fourth of July weekend tend to be weekends for social gatherings, some of which involve alcohol, which is why drunk driving accidents are more frequent during these times. Martin Luther King Day weekend is not an unusually popular time for road trips or for social events that involve drinking; in fact, it is after the peak season for drunk driving accidents, namely between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Despite this, the long weekend witnessed several fatal car accidents in Beaufort County, with victims including a pedestrian, the occupant of a car that collided with a stationary structure, and the occupants of two cars that collided head on. A Deadly Long Weekend in Beaufort County
News sources reported on three fatal collisions that took place in Beaufort County, South Carolina, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend in 2026;
- One man was driving his Ford Mustang on Bluffton Parkway when he lost control of the car, drove off the road, and struck a tree. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. An SUV struck him as he lay in the road. He was 56 years old.
- A Subaru and a Honda collided head on while traveling on the Sea Island Parkway on Lady’s Island; the Subaru caught fire. One woman of St. Helena Island was killed, as was another from Beaufort. Another 17-year-old who was in the car with Fields survived the collision and was in critical condition at the time that the news reports were published.

Justice for Victims of Car Accidents
Whenever someone dies in a traffic accident, the person’s family has the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit in civil court to seek compensation from the parties responsible for the accident. They can request compensation for the expenses related to the victim’s funeral, and for the victim’s accident-related medical expenses before he or she died. If the family depended financially on the victim, they can also seek compensation for the income that the family missed out on because of the victim’s untimely death.
