Columbia Forklifts Lawyer
Forklifts are commonly used in warehouses and on construction sites. They can carry and transport heavy items with ease. And while they are helpful tools for many job sites, they can also be deadly if not used properly.
Without proper care and training, a forklift can be a dangerous piece of equipment. If you or a loved one has been a victim, you may be able to seek some form of compensation. The Stanley Group can help. Contact our Columbia forklifts lawyer to file a claim.
Most Common Forklift Accidents
Forklift accidents occur in the following ways:
Rollovers are the most common type of forklift accident. They can be caused by turning too quickly, turning on an incline, driving on uneven surfaces, driving with the load elevated, and hauling overweight, uneven, or unbalanced loads.
Falling loads. Forklifts don’t always transport simple loads like boxes and pallets. Sometimes they also have to carry small or awkward items that can fall if not properly secured. Falling loads are a hazard to both pedestrians and operators, so drivers and loaders should ensure loads stay put on the forks.
Pedestrian collisions. Because forklifts operate near workers, pedestrian accidents are common. They can be caused by a lack of warning signs, as well as distracted driving and fatigue.
Blocked sight. If the driver can’t see where they’re going, it can lead to disaster quickly. Tall loads and blind spots can decrease visibility. In these cases, it is best to keep the forks low to the ground and have a co-worker act as a spotter.
Lack of training. Under federal law, every worker must be trained and certified before using a forklift. This doesn’t always happen, though. Many companies cut corners and don’t train workers, leading to serious accidents.
We know falls can be dangerous for people, but equipment such as forklifts are not exempt. Crossing thresholds can be dangerous for forklifts. Drivers must be careful when moving around a warehouse or in and out of trailers. Other causes of falls include trucks or trailers rolling away, slippery floors, and no dock plate.
Mechanical failures. Forklifts need to be maintained regularly, just like all equipment. Worn brakes, worn tires, and other issues can cause forklifts to break down and cause hazards. Forklifts need to be regularly serviced and repaired as needed in order to work properly and keep users safe.
