Can You File A Product Liability Claim If You Get Injured By A Space Heater?

The winter cold in South Carolina only gets bad sometimes. Therefore, we tend to deal with freezing temperatures on a case-by-case basis. In some parts of the country, snow plows stand at attention all winter long, people move their summer clothes into the basement and hang their winter clothes in the closet after Halloween, and apartment buildings convert their HVAC systems from air conditioning to heating once the fall weather becomes consistently cool. In South Carolina, we spend some winter days walking on the beach or beside the river in a T-shirt and shorts, and other days, we stay huddled at home with our space heaters. Space heaters do a fine job of generating a lot of heat in a small space, but they carry a substantial risk of fires and burns. As with any consumer product, you have the right to file a product liability claim if you used the product in the intended manner, but the product malfunctioned because of a manufacturer’s defect, and you suffered injuries as a result. If you got injured while staying warm with a space heater, contact a Columbia product liability lawyer.
Colleton County Woman Suffers Burns in Space Heater Accident
One evening in December 2025, a woman in Colleton County was sitting in a chair in the living room of her mobile home. She had plugged a space heater into the wall to stay warm, and she had a blanket covering her body. The blanket caught fire from the heat of the space heater; news sources did not indicate whether the blanket was directly touching the space heater.
The woman ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911. Firefighters extinguished the fire, and paramedics treated the woman for burn injuries to her legs and then transported her to a hospital.
Space Heater Safety Tips
Space heaters cause fires and injuries each year, but most of these do not result in product liability claims. You can only prevail in a product liability claim if you can prove that the accident happened despite you using the product safely. In the case of space heater accidents, it could jeopardize your case if you let your clothing or bedding get too close to the space heater. Likewise, to reduce the risk of injury, you should plug the space heater directly into the wall instead of using an extension cord. Likewise, you should not leave a space heater plugged in when you are not in the room, and you should supervise children and pets closely in rooms where space heaters are present. You should also not use the space heater if the cord is frayed or wires are exposed.
