Beware Of Left Turns

When you are in a hurry, left turn lanes get on your nerves. If the turn lane is empty, there are invariably so many cars in front of you in the lane that is going straight, stopped at a red light while the cars in the turn lanes turn, that you cannot merge into the turn lane while the arrow is still green. Once you get to the turn lane and the light turns to a green arrow, the arrow only stays green long enough for a few cars to turn, far fewer than the number of cars that want to turn if the traffic is heavy. At some intersections, this means that, once the fleeting moment of green arrow has passed, your only option is to wait until the arrow turns green again. At others, there is the dreaded flashing yellow arrow, where you can turn at your own risk. Of course, in some parts of South Carolina, you are lucky to have a turn lane at all. On roads where there are two or fewer lanes in each direction, drivers just turn left from the leftmost lane, whenever there is room for them to turn. Judging where there is enough room to turn is harder than it seems, especially in heavy traffic. If you got injured in a car accident where one of the cars involved was making a left turn, contact a Columbia car accident lawyer.
Lexington Woman Killed in Collision With Pickup Truck While Turning Left
Early in the morning of February 20, 2026, three cars were involved in a fatal chain reaction collision on Lexington Highway. A Nissan SUV was turning left from Highway 378 onto Spring Hill Road, when a Ford pickup truck struck it as it crossed the lanes of oncoming traffic on Highway 378. Shortly thereafter, a Cadillac was turning right onto Highway 378 and the SUV struck it.
The occupants of the Ford and the Cadillac did not suffer life-threatening injuries, but the driver of the Lincoln sustained catastrophic brain injuries and died three days after the accident. She was 42 years old and is survived by her two teenage daughters and her sister.
Getting Justice After a Left Turn Accident
When determining fault for an accident, insurance companies examine all the evidence on a case-by-case basis. For many accidents, the insurance companies divide the fault for the accident among two or more parties. They might determine, for example, that the driver who was turning left should have waited until the car driving straight had passed, but they might also determine that the car going straight was driving too fast, so both drivers might bear responsibility for the accident. If many accidents have happened under similar circumstances at the same location, the city or county might bear responsibility and might eventually install a traffic light with a green arrow turn lane.
